Madrid Orientation: Layout and Directions

Travelling around the city of Madrid can be a little confusing at times, particularly in the city's historic Old Town, which is full of narrow streets and alleyways, hiding a number of treasures. However, Madrid's popular metro train system is simple to use and allows you to travel around much of the city with ease.

Madrid is home to a number of spacious public squares, with the Plaza de Espana being amongst the most notable, featuring the Edificio Espana, one of the tallest skyscrapers in the whole of Spain. The Plaza de Espana also offers a good selection of attractions, including restaurants, street cafés and bars, together with shops and plentiful accommodation.

Other parts of Madrid worthy of a visit include the Puerta del Sol to the south, and the central Plaza Mayor, where you will find a host of Tapas bars and coffee shops featuring outdoor patio areas.
